It happened last week. Patricia Hennington from Essex, UK, was in the kitchen frying pancakes with her three-year-old daughter, Sofia. When Hennington, who suffers from a rare heart condition, suddenly collapsed, Sofia didn’t panic. She knew exactly what to do in such situations.

Her mother had prepared her in advance for this possible scenario. Sofia was wise enough to understand the urgency and quickly dialed the number she had recently learned — leading to Essex Police’s emergency line.

Julie Buckley was the dispatcher who answered the call, and she too handled it superbly by treating the young child's voice on the line with seriousness. Buckley calmed Sofia and asked her different questions about her age, hobbies, and finally her address.

Little Sofia knew how to answer everything, and in no time, an emergency unit was rushed to the scene, providing Patricia with medical treatment that saved her life.

After her mother was discharged from the hospital, Sofia and her family were invited to the Essex police station, where she was awarded a special certificate for her maturity and bravery. "We are all very proud of Sofia and our emergency dispatcher, Julie," said Matt Horne, the station commander. "Even though Sofia has just turned three, she knew exactly what to do when her mom collapsed, thanks to the time and patience her mom took to explain and teach Sofia this vital life skill—how to seek help when someone feels unwell and needs immediate medical assistance."

Horne added that Sofia’s family wanted to emphasize the importance of teaching other families these 'little' things that can save lives. "Everyone should start teaching their kids how to call for help as early as possible. It was wonderful to meet this special little girl, and her meeting with Julie was charming."

Dispatcher Julie also joined in, noting, "For a child her age, she handled it pretty amazingly. She knew exactly what to do. For me, it was great to meet her and see what this emergency call meant for her family. If she hadn’t dialed, everything would have been completely different now."
