An extraordinary event was captured this week on amateur video and later broadcast on local U.S. news channels: 34-year-old paraglider Damian Leroy fell from his glider while attempting an aerial turn from 150 feet (approximately 50 meters) in the air. The tragic fall resulted in a broken back, thigh, pelvis, three ribs, and a punctured lung – but against all odds, he conquered everything and survived. "It was just a perfect day for my favorite sport," Leroy recalls. "Before the fall, everything was going smoothly. When I reached the turn, there was a motor failure, and I realized I couldn't navigate or control the parachute, so I decided to jump before it was too late."
Leroy made his decision to jump moments before his parachute crashed into a nearby thicket of trees. The person who managed to capture those terrifying moments was Andrew Waldo, who quickly understood what was about to happen and yelled during filming, "He's jumping, he's going to jump."
After undergoing several surgeries at Saint Mary's Medical Center, Leroy feels better and says, "I believe it's a miracle that I am alive today," he says. "The decision to jump was the best one I've ever made and I hope my story can inspire others to live life better and view every moment positively. Because nothing in our lives is truly taken for granted."
