Imagine hearing screams from your backyard, rushing out to see your child on the ground with a hungry mountain lion gnawing at him.
It sounds like a wild nightmare, but that was the reality for one mother in Colorado last Friday. She heard the screams of her five-year-old son and found a mountain lion attacking him.
Without hesitation, she rushed to the lion, pushed one of its paws aside, and discovered her son's entire head was already in the lion's mouth. But she was relentless.
"Somehow, she managed to pry the lion's jaws apart," said the county deputy sheriff who responded to the scene. "She is simply a hero." After freeing her son's head, the mother scooped him up and ran. The boy suffered deep cuts to his head, face, and neck, but his mother's quick action saved his life. The father, who had just arrived home, rushed them to the nearest hospital.
Authorities reported that the lion was relatively young—only about two years old. If it had been a full-grown lion, its weight would have made rescuing the child nearly impossible.
Colorado is home to 4,500 mountain lions. These animals sometimes wander into urban areas seeking food. Since 1990, three people have been killed and 18 injured in Colorado due to mountain lion attacks.
The lion that attacked the child last week fled the scene, but wildlife officers tracked it down and fatally shot it.
