A mother shared a story on Facebook after her daughter had a near-fatal encounter with a houseplant, sparking widespread attention online. The culprit? A popular plant known as the spotted Dumb Cane (Dieffenbachia), often seen in homes, offices, or gardens. Few are aware it harbors highly toxic compounds that can be deadly.
"This plant almost killed my child," an American user shared on her Facebook page. "She only tasted a small piece of its leaf, yet within moments, her tongue swelled, prompting an emergency hospital visit."
So why is it so dangerous?
Parts of the spotted Dieffenbachia contain calcium oxalate – a highly hazardous compound. It can lead to skin swelling, mouth and tongue burning, tingling sensations, and in severe cases, heart issues and even death.
Reported effects on young children and animals "sampling" the leaves have been catastrophic. Some cases have led to vision issues upon eye contact, while others have resulted tragically in disability or death within days. The severe allergic reactions this plant can trigger in both adults and children demand immediate hospital attention without delay.
Adults who touch the plant's leaves need to wash their hands thoroughly and ensure it does not contact eyes, mouth, or other body parts. However, it's best not to risk it. Despite its affordability and attractiveness, consider keeping it far from your living spaces, especially if you have children.
