A mysterious round object glimmering with red and yellow lights. Is it a flying saucer carrying aliens from outer space?
Not quite. These images were captured by a remotely operated underwater robot exploring the deepest parts of the ocean, east of the Mariana Islands in the western Pacific Ocean. Until now, researchers knew little about this underwater region, which is inaccessible to humans due to its depth. However, the robot managed to dive into the depths and took these pictures.
This is a rare type of jellyfish. It is blessed with two sets of tentacles: long and short. When the long tentacles are extended forward, the jellyfish stays still, setting an ambush for its prey.
The red and yellow hues in the jellyfish's round body, researchers speculate, are likely its reproductive glands.
In general, not many creatures inhabit the deepest parts of the ocean. Nevertheless, the robot deployed to the Mariana shores identified, in addition to the unique jellyfish, various types of corals, sponges, marine worms, and crustaceans.
