China: A newborn whose mother has a genetic issue that gave her extra fingers was born this week with a staggering 31 fingers and toes. The surprised mother explained that prenatal ultrasounds hadn't revealed the unique condition. "I never imagined my little Honghong would enter the world with 16 toes and 15 fingers. But to me, he's the cutest baby in the world regardless," she said.
This condition is known in the medical world as 'polydactyly', occurring in about one in 1,000 births. Most cases involve one or two extra fingers (like Honghong's mother, who has an additional finger on each hand).
Doctors are now concerned that it might be an inherited condition that is nearly impossible to predict. Little Honghong will have to wait until he is about a year and a half before doctors can perform surgery to remove the extra digits.
