Sometimes, on our well-trodden paths, life surprises us. It was an ordinary day when photographer Evan Switzer grabbed his camera and set off on his usual route through a beloved park near the town of River Heads in Australia.

That day, he couldn't have anticipated capturing a particularly rare and poignant moment — the farewell of a father kangaroo to the mother who was nearing her end. Alongside the tender photos he shared on social media, Switzer penned the following words:

"I heard a strange noise, almost like faint cries. Approaching closer, I saw a female kangaroo lying exhausted in the arms of a male. The male was visibly distressed, trying hard to comprehend what was happening to his partner. Beside them stood a smaller kangaroo, probably their offspring, watching his mother with sorrow-filled eyes, softly crying what sounded to me like: 'Don't go, don't leave me.'

"This was a profound moment for me. The mother attempted to reassure her baby, even trying to extend her hand to touch him, but when the father kangaroo tried to lift her, she collapsed to the ground, utterly spent. Both the father and the young one were very confused, and their cries intensified. I realized they were mourning and grieving her imminent end.

"I noticed people trying to approach to help, but the father warded everyone off. I sensed he wished to spend a few more precious moments with his mate, the mother of his son, whom he loved dearly. Parting was hard for them, and I saw how they truly struggled to let go. It was incredibly moving to see such moments exist in nature. I've photographed many beautiful instances in the wild, but I've never seen anything quite like this."
