Dave Sandoval always experienced hunger at home, but at 17, he decided to end his suffering and left. "I couldn't live in a home without food anymore, and I chose to become homeless." For 35 long years, he moved from one temporary shelter to another, narrowly escaping disaster numerous times. He worked various jobs like a sales clerk, a bowling alley worker, a golf cart repairman, a car washer, a factory worker producing oil, and a real estate agent. Today, he's the head of a large healthy food manufacturing and sales company, making millions every year.
What was the secret to his success? For Dave, it was all about sticking to three pivotal 'lessons' and applying them with unwavering commitment:
1) Avoiding blame
2) Hard work
3) Trust and integrity
"When I left home, I was very angry that my parents didn't do for us what other parents do for their children. But as I grew and learned from life, I understood that parents essentially give us opportunities – and it's up to us to make the most of them. I decided to live in the moment, to seize it completely, and not to let the past interfere with who I could be today. I took responsibility for my decisions and actions, and didn't look to blame my parents or anyone else for wrongs done to me.
"The next phase is hard work – there's no escaping it. You might make temporary gains through tricks, but your satisfaction won't be real unless you walk the straight path. If you haven't labored with your own hands and earned your bread with effort, the success won't be fulfilling.
"In my life, I met a brilliant salesman whose reputation preceded him. Wherever he went, he managed to convince people to buy into what he believed in, and I always admired him for it. Once, during a heart-to-heart talk, I discussed this with him, and what he told me stays with me to this day: 'People want to believe in trustworthy people – be trustworthy to yourself and others, and you won't lose from it'. Now, when I sell my goods, people know they're buying trust, not just a product. Everything else is just extra."
