In the ninth month of her pregnancy, when Holli Gorveatt arrived at the hospital for a routine check, she discovered her identical twins were facing a rare blood syndrome. "One twin suffered from severe anemia due to a critical lack of blood, while the other had an excess," explained Dr. Martin Walker, head of fetal medicine at the Evergreen Medical Center. He noted that this is an extremely dangerous condition, and if left untreated, results in fatalities in 90% of cases.

As the twins' pressure on the cervix increased, the medical team had to deliver the first twin at just 23 weeks. For context, while babies at this age can survive outside the womb, it's not ideal, as their systems are not fully developed. Generally, their organs are proportionate, and vital systems function well. "We preferred to keep the second twin in the womb to increase survival chances," Dr. Walker explained in an interview. "The cervix was manually stitched to prevent the second twin's birth. For now, he can safely remain in the womb and move more freely. Holli will stay hospitalized and monitored until we can deliver her, hopefully in January," said the doctor.
