Here's a scenario that could happen to anyone, and a good reminder to be more mindful about checking the food we eat. While it's not unheard of to find critters in produce — since they do come from the earth — it's still a shock. Who among us hasn't snacked on grapes without inspecting each one?
If it happened to Stephanie Daniel, a U.S. resident, it could happen to any of us. "I did my usual grocery shopping at the local store, which included a box of purple grapes. When I got home, I put the box in the fridge. Later, before leaving for work, I saw a spider in the fridge. I ignored it, not realizing it was linked to the 'bomb' of spiders that hit me during my night shift."
She will regret that bite into the tainted grape her whole life. "The feeling of nausea was terrible, and I promised myself to never eat grapes without cutting them open first, to avoid any unpleasant 'surprises'."
Daniel quickly went to the store owner where she bought the grapes and demanded suitable compensation for her 'trauma', but the owner replied, "You can choose another bunch; there's nothing more I can do." He's right; he can't, but she can, and so can we — by being mindful about what we put in our mouths, in every sense.
