A group of Canadian researchers recently came together to explore a fascinating question: Why do people cling to their comfort zones, wherever and whenever possible? About 150 men and women participated in the experiment, undergoing various tests in different situations while connected to special and cumbersome equipment. The goal of the equipment was, of course, to assess their willingness to exert effort when necessary.

Of all the participants, not a single one made an effort to push their bodies and move beyond their own limits. Universally, they all sought the easiest path — one that would apply the least pressure on their bodies and require minimal effort to reach the desired goal: comfort. "We found there's a reasonable explanation behind this behavior," one researcher remarked. "The human body is designed in a way that it conserves energy, saving it for a 'more appropriate' time." According to him, any changes the 'body' makes, if necessary, are generally based on precise calculations of efficiency and long-term benefit.
