Alexandria Gory from St. Louis, Missouri, found one day that her credit card was out of service. Local businesses refused to accept it, forcing her to pay cash for every transaction she needed. As if that wasn't enough, Gory wanted to move to a new home following a horrific accident where her grandson was killed right in front of her house. Searching for a place untainted by such tragic memories posed an unexpected obstacle: nobody was willing to rent to her.

The reason for these refusals to rent to Gory or accept her credit card was soon discovered: the credit card company reported in 2003 that Gory had died. "In the summer of 2013, I found out they'd written 'deceased' on my credit card records," she recounts. "I can't describe how I felt. It was awful."

Gory embarked on a journey to convince the credit card company that she was indeed alive. Only after many long months of phone calls, letters, and emails did the company realize the mistake and return Gory to the land of the living. Yet for Gory, the story didn't end there. She's now suing the credit card company for the emotional distress caused by the error that turned her into a ghost.
