A major investigation is currently underway by researchers from the Mongolian Institute for Cultural Relics and Archaeology, along with the Archaeology Center at Jilin University. They were the first to uncover this 'mass grave' containing 97 skeletons in an ancient 4,000-year-old house. The researchers are keen to understand what led these individuals to their deaths—whether it was a natural disaster or a plague.
In addition to the skeletons, the site also contained pottery, survival tools, arrows, and spearheads. According to researchers, about half of the skeletons belonged to individuals aged between 20-35, a detail that reminded them of a similar incident that occurred in the village of Miaozigou, in northeastern China. "This similarity might suggest that the site in Managa was like that in Miaozigou, meaning both could be connected to an outbreak of a severe contagious disease," the researchers wrote in their study published in the journal Chinese Archaeology.
