The Lisbon pub in Liverpool has witnessed many strange occurrences, but none quite like this: This week, during a gathering with friends at the pub, Rachel McQueen snapped several photos with her camera. However, the next day, as she reviewed the pictures on her phone, she was shocked to see an unfamiliar figure staring back among the familiar faces of her friends. "At first, I thought it was just exaggerated light reflection," McQueen explained. "But upon second thought, it didn't seem like a light reflection at all but more like a real figure. It was very odd because no one was behind us when we took the photo."
This isn't the first time reports of ghost sightings have surfaced in Liverpool. In fact, there are over 25 books by author Tom Slemen documenting these occurrences, all agreeing that Liverpool is haunted. Most stories revolve around two main apparitions: an unknown woman and a man named Sir Archibald Tutton Salvidge, a city council member in 1910.
"It's a very interesting case," says Slemen. "Sir Salvidge had a long political career, including a position on the city council, and his supporters even believed he had a bright future ahead in politics. For years, they tried to persuade him to run for the office of the mayor of Liverpool. In 1907, at a public event held at a city restaurant, a significant moment occurred: Salvidge stood at the head of the table and declared that not only would he run for mayor, but he also pondered out loud if he should have already done so in the 1910 elections." According to Slemen, since his death in 1928, Sir Salvidge's ghost, along with that of the young woman, frequently appears at the Lisbon pub. Why this particular pub? It's a good question currently under investigation, aiming to determine if there's a connection between the circumstances of his death and this specific location.
"There's no doubt that seeing such a thing in a regular photo is a frightening experience. However, I do believe in an afterlife and am convinced that spirits walk among us. Some people are exceptional and can see them, whereas most simply cannot," McQueen concluded.
