For eight long hours, a group of people worked to rescue a baby orca that got trapped among the rocks at a Canadian beach. How the young whale managed to end up in such a dangerous spot remains unclear, but it was marine researcher Eric Keen who discovered it and quickly called for help. Without his quick action, the baby orca might not have survived.
Emergency teams from various animal rescue organizations rushed to the scene. They began dousing the distressed and crying orca with water, using buckets and water-soaked blankets to keep it cool. For eight hours, they labored, waiting for the tide to come in. "If Eric hadn't seen it in time, it's likely it wouldn't have survived on the beach for so many hours," said Janie Ray, who participated in the rescue operation. "It's rare to see a whale stuck like this," noted Dr. Martin Hollna, the chief veterinarian at Vancouver Aquarium. "This indicates something might be wrong, perhaps injuries it suffered from."
When the tide finally arrived, the brave baby orca leapt back into the water and quickly swam towards a pod of whales waiting offshore. "I'm glad the whale managed to swim back into the sea on its own, but that doesn't mean it's 100% okay," Dr. Hollna added. "Being stuck between the rocks for so long could cause irreversible damage to its muscles, blood flow, heart, and kidneys, as well as toxin infiltration from dead muscle tissue. I hope it can survive this ordeal."
