The Woman Who Can't Afford to Laugh
Be thankful you can laugh freely because some in this world, like Tracy Herring from the USA, must avoid it to live safely.
It's rare to hear of people who have died from laughter, yet Tracy Herring, a 44-year-old from the USA, lives with a condition that makes this possibility all too real. She suffers from a neurological disorder known as cataplexy, robbing her of the privilege to enjoy life and laugh freely. "When I start to laugh, my neck weakens, and I lose control of my limbs," Herring explains, noting that the height of an episode results in total paralysis on one side of her body. "It only lasts a few minutes, but it is genuinely terrifying," she says.
