It's rare to hear of people who have died from laughter, yet Tracy Herring, a 44-year-old from the USA, lives with a condition that makes this possibility all too real. She suffers from a neurological disorder known as cataplexy, robbing her of the privilege to enjoy life and laugh freely. "When I start to laugh, my neck weakens, and I lose control of my limbs," Herring explains, noting that the height of an episode results in total paralysis on one side of her body. "It only lasts a few minutes, but it is genuinely terrifying," she says.
On several social occasions, she has suddenly collapsed due to a burst of laughter. These experiences led her to make the brave decision to avoid all activities that might make her laugh, such as watching movies or attending stand-up shows.
