Imagine your surprise if a fish with fearsome teeth suddenly lands in your backyard! That's exactly what happened recently to many residents of Fairbanks, Alaska, who were startled to find foot-long Arctic lampreys raining down on them from above, seemingly out of nowhere. What's behind this surprising phenomena?
Known in English as "round mouths," these lampreys lack jaws but are equipped with keratin teeth (the same material as human nails and hair). In response to the rising number of complaints, local authorities launched an investigation which revealed an interesting twist: these peculiar fish are actually a favorite delicacy for the area's abundant seagull population.
Due to their slippery bodies and frantic movements, the seagulls can't always keep a firm grip on them. As a result, they sometimes lose hold, causing the fish to drop down to the startled humans below.
