Every summer, geologists and researchers from various fields gather around this Oregon lake to unravel the mystery of its vanishing act. During winter, the lake brims with life, but come summer, everything dissipates, leaving nothing but the gaping hole as evidence.
So what exactly is happening at this intriguing lake? Geologists explain that the lake's behavior is influenced by natural tunnels, acting like 'pipes' in the lake area. These channels are meant to redirect lava during volcanic eruptions. Once the lava stops flowing, these tunnels merge to form a long conduit ending in an opening—the very hole in the lakebed through which the water drains.
According to Jude McCagh, a national reserve worker in the area, the lake's waters drain through this hole throughout the year, with the phenomenon intensifying just before summer.
