A treasure trove of silver coins valued at £34 million was discovered at the beginning of this week among the wreckage of a British ship sunk by the Nazis in 1942.
The treasure was found by British treasure hunters working for a company called DOS (Deep Ocean Search), on a steamer lying at a record depth of 17,000 feet underwater. The ship likely sailed from Bombay to England via Brazil, but was attacked and sunk by a Nazi submarine commanded by a German captain named Carl Friedrich Merten.
Retrieving the treasure from such a depth was no easy task.
One DOS employee said that due to changing weather conditions and the significant depth at which the wreckage was found, the search was difficult and arduous. Additionally, the remains were scattered at significant distances from each other and were often covered in a thick layer of mud, presenting a real challenge to the treasure recovery experts.
